Mailpress is a pretty nifty plugin. It sends newsletters to your subscribers automatically from your website, based on what kind of content they subscribed to, and how often they want to receive your news.

Once it’s all set up, you’ll probably want to customize the Mailpress newsletter template, because it’s kinda boring and ugly right out of the box. The header image is the main thing a client will want to change.

Mailpress newsletter themes are set up a lot like WordPress themes. They are located inside of the Mailpress plugin folder.

To replace the header image, replace the header.png file inside the mailpress theme’s images folder with your new header. Then adjust the style.css file to get the desired look.

Important: Make note of these changes. Updating the plugin will over-write all plugin files including your mailpress theme files.

Within the Google XML Sitemap Plugin options, there is an option to add the sitemap url to the virtual robots.txt.

Pretty Cool, right?! Sure, until you want to EDIT the robots.txt file. Let’s give it a go.

A good place to start is to copy the text that is in the virtual robots.txt file provided when using the plugin mentioned above, paste it into a new file called robots.txt, and then edit the code to your preference. Now upload it to your root directory.

Here’s an example of my robots.txt file:

User-agent: *
Disallow: /wp-admin/
Disallow: /wp-includes/
Disallow: /wp-content/plugins/
Disallow: /wp-content/themes/

Sitemap: http://www.websitename.com/sitemap.xml

Once uploaded, this robots.txt file will over-ride the “virtual” one created via the sitemap plugin, meaning that plugin option won’t work anymore. No big deal. Just a heads up.

One of the smallest details that has a huge impact on your site design is the favicon. Ever notice how popular and well designed sites have a small icon in your brower window, right next to the URL address? or maybe you’ll see it on your browser tab. If you don’t create a custom favicon, you will usually end up with nothing, or something generic, or worst, the theme designer’s logo.

A favicon is nothing more than a 16 pixels by 16 pixels icon, and the file has a .ico extension. As you can imagine it is pretty difficult to put complex graphics in such a small frame. When designing your favicon, use simple images or letters. Make sure that the color of the favicon reflects the color of your website, so that visitors will be able to associate the icon with the site.

Note: If you have never created a favicon before, you may have to download a plugin for Photoshop. The .ico format wasn’t an available file format until I added this plugin. Go to http://www.telegraphics.com.au/sw/ to download the plugin for photoshop.
After installing, you will be able to save your custom 16×16 image as “favicon.ico”. Now find where your favicon is saved in your wordpress theme and replace it with your new file.

If you are using the Genesis Studiopress Framework, install and activate the “Genesis Favicon Uploader” plugin. Once installed, navigate to Genesis -> Upload Favicon, and upload the new favicon!

Done! Now your website is blingin’! Need help creating a favicon? Hire me!

Sometimes you’ll want more than WordPress offers “out-of-the-box”. That’s where plugins come in handy. There are a lot of photo plugins out there, and I’ve tried many. NextGen Gallery Plugin has been one of my favorites thus far. I’m going to write a quick tutorial to get started, it can be as easy or complicated as you want it to be. In this post, I’m going to attempt to keep it simple.

One thing to keep in mind, with NextGen, you are creating galleries separate from your posts. Using this plugin, you’ll be creating the galleries, and then inserting them into your posts and pages using shortcode or using the NextGen button in the post editor.

First, install and activate the plugin NextGEN Gallery.

After the plugins is activated, a new ”Gallery’ menu will show in the wordpress admin sidebar. This is where you will go to upload images.

To upload your first gallery, click on “Add Gallery / Images”.

Enter the name of your new gallery in the field provided, then click “Add Gallery”.

On the next screen, upload the gallery images, and select the gallery you just created from the pull down menu. Then you will be taken to a screen where you can edit the title, descriptions, and tags for all your photos.

Once you’ve uploaded your images, and you are ready to show them, go to your post or create a new one if you haven’t yet.

On the post/page admin panel, look for the small nextgen gallery icon in the WYSIWYG post editor, and click on it.

From there, select the gallery from the dropdown menu.

Choose how you’d like to show your gallery: Image list, Slideshow, and imagebrowser.

Click “Insert”.

Now you will see a piece of shortcode on your page that looks like : [nggallery id=x]

Preview your post and see how it looks. There are tons of settings in the Settings sub-menu of the Gallery plugin menu, so customization is possible. That’s where people like me come in! I’m here to make sense of the BS when you don’t want to!

Leave a comment if there is something you’d like for me to cover about this wordpress plugin! Cheers & Happy Blogging!

I like to avoid adding plugins if I can write the functionality into a child theme. So here’s goes a quick how to add post format types to a Genesis Framework Child Theme.

Add the following code to the child theme’s functions.php file:

/** Add support for post formats */
add_theme_support( 'post-formats', array(
    'aside',
    'audio',
    'chat',
    'gallery',
    'image',
    'link',
    'quote',
    'status',
    'video'
) );

/** Add support for post format images */
add_theme_support( 'genesis-post-format-images' );

Download post format icons by StudioPress here, then drop the files in the images/post-formats/ directory inside your child theme.

Next Step: Style the formats to your liking. More on that in another post! Cheers!

One important piece of information missing from the Admin Report Email is the Product’s SKU. After scouring the internet, I found a quick fix to add it to the email! Thanks, Steve!

Here goes!

Find this file within the plugin folder: wp‑e‑commerce\wpsc‑theme\functions\wpsc‑transaction_results_functions.php

find the following code around line 269 (WPEC version 3.8.8)

$report_product_list.= " - " . $row['quantity'] . " " . $row['name'] . "  " . $message_price . "\n\r";

And replace it with this:

$report_product_list.= " - " . $row['quantity'] . " " . wpsc_product_sku($row['prodid']) . " " . $row['name'] . "  " . $message_price . "\n\r";

Happy Coding! Don’t forget, you may need to edit this code with each WP eCommerce update, since this is a plugin core file! Bookmark me!

I’ve had to do this more than once, so I figured it was time for a tutorial. This one is pretty easy though. I needed to change the height of the header banner image on one of my websites in order for the desired image to fit properly. I had to over-ride the settings that tell it what size the default header is. Here’s how I did it.

Open the functions.php file in the Twenty Eleven theme.

Now look for this chunk of code, and change the width or height to the desired pixels:

<pre>// The height and width of your custom header.
	// Add a filter to twentyeleven_header_image_width and twentyeleven_header_image_height to change these values.
	define( 'HEADER_IMAGE_WIDTH', apply_filters( 'twentyeleven_header_image_width', 1000 ) );
	define( 'HEADER_IMAGE_HEIGHT', apply_filters( 'twentyeleven_header_image_height', 218 ) );</pre>

Done!
